Great Restaurant but not a perfect lunch.
Reviewed by Jonnymac1981 on Mar 9, 2010

A stunning dining room that imbues class and prestige, Marcus Wareings restaurant at the Berkley is an experience that grips you from the moment you enter. Truely exclusive, it feels like having stumbled upon a millionaires playground. A solemn, church-like atmosphere prevails to its detriment with an informative and pleasant waiting staff coming over classy but distinctly cold. The food was a mixed experience. Having the lunch menu we selected the fois gras with crab, bramley apple and lime for starter, which was edible but simply did not work. Obviously the finest produce was used but the acidic nature of the fruit completely overpowered the fois gras, never mind the crab. The central over-riding sensation in every mouthfull was the strange textural mix of velvety fois gras, meaty crab and crunchy apple. While i'm willing to accept Wareings cullinary expertiese over my own and assume that the dish works for some, I cant say with some certaincy that both myself and my companion disliked it. After 2 very commendable mains, well cooked, if a little fussy and overcomplicated (crumble on fish?!?) we moved on to a lovely egg tart desert that was simply terrific. A special mention must also be made regarding the after dinner chocolates which were simply superlative. Upon mentioning this to the waiter he offered us the chance to take some away which was a lovely gesture. Coming in at £100 the lunch was a bargain but there a few things that need to be adressed for the retaurant to gain that elusive 3rd star. Little details like giving out room temperature butter so you can actually spread it would help and an uber welcoming maitre-de like JC at Ramsays would definatley help !

Amazing, best meal experience ever!!! 5 *****

My brother treated his wife, myself and my wife to dinner last night (06th March). I must say wow wow wow. We went for the 10 course tasting menu and what an experience it was. The dining room was amazing, the staff super attentive. We are not upperclass or rich in anyway but fully appriciated the whole adventure. We have eaten at the 'Fat Duck' 'Gordon Ramsey Hospital Road' and 'Joël Robuchon @ the MGM Las Vegas' These three having 3 Michelin stars. This Restaurant is every bit as good if not better! Towards the end of our evening one of the staff came to our table and asked if we would like to go in to the kitchen to see how it works, of course we jumped at the chance. This was not a quick in and out tour, we were shown every station and got to ask questions to all of the Chefs. Marcus was not there but his head Chef Alyn Williams was. He was asking us if we were enjoying our night and seemed genuinley interested, a really nice touch. The bill came in at just over £800 (lots of champers with the meal!!!) for the four of us but it you only do this sort of thing once every couple of years, it is worth every penny!!! I can't wait for our next foody experience now!!!

This restaurant has to be one of the best in London at the moment. The hard part was getting a table. However, as someone who eats out a lot, this is worth the wait.

How do you improve on perfection?
Reviewed by rpgilbert on Feb 10, 2010

I am fortunate enough to have been here several times over the last 12 months or so and I must say it is the BEST restaurant I have ever visited in my live! The service is faultless to say the least and the food is perfect. I would love to know how Michelin expect this restaurant to improve because I can not understand how it does not have 3 stars, and yes I have ate in a few 3 star restaurants which fail to meet the standard set here.
