Mara House's Salahadeen Restaurant is Fantastic!
Reviewed by TravelingBotanyProf on Feb 6, 2010

The Salahadeen Restaurant of Mara House is the place to go if you want high quality and a great variety of Egyptian dishes combined with lovely surroundings, excellent service, and a good price. Dinners consist of a 3-course meal. The first course has two superb soups, the main course has about a dozen Egyptian dishes that are truly well prepared and outstanding in both taste and appearance. This is followed by an Egyptian desert with hibiscus tea. All in all a very pleasant dining experience. The Salahadeen Restaurant of Mara House served the finest Egyptian food we had during our stay in Luxor.

Great ambiance, Exceptional food, Educational experience

Your trip to Luxor is not complete until you have dinner at Salahadeen. You need to make reservations, and dinner is always served at 7pm. If you're not staying at Mara House which is adjacent, you can call for directions, give them to your taxi driver, and he will either wait for you or they can call him to pick you up after dinner. IT IS WORTH THE TRIP! You begin with two exceptional soups then are offered twelve authentic Egyptian dishes from which to tantalize your tastebuds. Then there is dessert...a sweet concoction to end the best meal you will have in Egypt. and hibiscus tea. The spices are subtle, not overpowering, and you will want to bring the chef home! They also have the best full-service bar in Luxor! Beautiful atmosphere, charming and courteous staff, delicious food, extremely reasonable price.

Superb introduction to Egyptian cuisine

This restaurant is part of the Mara House Hotel where we stayed in July 2009. It isn't open every night as they will only open if enough people have booked (there were 8 of us when we ate there which would seem to be a minimum). The food was superb, with lots of dishes served at once. If you go to Luxor and aren't staying at the Mara House make sure you try and book as I feel you wil not get this type of experience of traditional Egyptian food in many other places (where you can safely eat without fear of stomach upsets)

Relaxed and excellent introduction to Egyptian cuisine

Firstly I was staying at the attached hotel (Mara House - utterly superb), and ate here 3 nights. The organisation of the serving is slightly odd: there is one sitting starting about 7 and there is no menu to choose from as the idea is a "mini-banquet" to introduce you to common Egyptian dishes. The menu "rotates" every 3 days. The service was unhurried, relaxed and helpful. I tended to start in the bar and wandered into the resteraunt after a while. First was a soup course of two soups to sample (delivered to the table). These were excellent (particularly the lark's tongue). Secondly a large tray with some 10 dishes plus rice and flat bread arrived. Each dish is explained individually and we were assured there was more of everything if we wanted, which was pretty unnecessary as there was more than enough for all. There is a good mix of meat and vegetarian. highlights included the whitecheese dish, the lentils, the homus and the beef "stew". Finally a single desert with tea arrived. These were excellent, without fail, and the best sweets i had in two weeks in Egypt. As an introduction to Egyptian food this is excellent. The one drawback is that if you don't like Egyptian food this resteraunt won't appeal.

Beautiful set up - slightly underwhelming food and overpriced

This is a great business concept. Serve everyone the same food, most of it from the cheapest possible ingredients (vegetables), on silver platters in a wonderful environment. And charge a high price - but one that is just a little cheaper than the big western hotels. Kerrching !! The building and furnishings are a delight and lots of effort has gone into making the place look like an imaginary egyptian grandees house. Tranquil and serene but very classy. The service and welcome was excellent, very 5 star with a homely bonhomie. The food though was a bit disappointing and not apatch on Sofra. Plenty of vegetable dishes but many were bland and I couldn't help feel that it was sort of padding things out to make it seem like you were getting a feast. Ditto with the meat dishes. Soup was excellent though - as it is in most places in Luxor. Overall a beautiful place with great service but the average food and high price left me somewhat underwhelmed. Sofra beats it hands down.
