This isn't the type of place that you would recommend to everybody, it's quite a sobering and disturbing experience.
However, it's excellent and very professionally done. We spent a couple of hours in here without realising.
I really like the way they've presented the information in stages, it gives you a great overall picture of what happened.
Best Holocaust Memorial I've Visited In Europe

Having been to Auschwitz Birkenau and the Holocaust memorial in Berlin, I have to say that the Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest was the most informative and well organized display I've seen. There is a lot of stuff to read and it can be a little confusing at first because it isn't organized chronologically but by phases of persecution, but this is one of the most well put together displays I have seen. The facility is very modern with lots of interactive display areas where you go through information on a screen on your own. We had planned to only be here for an hour but it took almost 3 and I had to skip a lot of reading to get finished. The movie displays are very good though so if you don't have that much time, skip some of the reading and watch the films. I learned a few new things while I was here! The entrance fee of 1300 HUF is worth it, and if you're a student it's only 100 HUF which is totally a bargain! One of the most enjoyable (but sad) things I did in Budapest.
An Outstanding Presentation and a Moving Experience

This was an outstanding museum that should not be missed. It takes a little extra effort to get there but it is well worth it. All exhibit items have Hungarian and English story boards or subtitles or audio commentaries and are very thoughtfully done. The displays use technology in a masterful way to tell the story of the Hungarian Jewish people and of the Roma people. I cannot express how enlightening and moving this presentation was. It is one of the best museums I've visited. Don't miss it. Note that in my opinion, this is far superior to the House of Terror Museum, also in Budapest.
Deeply Moving

The museum is on par (though much smaller) than the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. It doesn't try to cover the entire Holocaust, just the part involving Hungary. Also, unlike the "House of Terror Museum," it doesn't whitewash Hungarian complicity in the Holocaust.
The opening room introduces us to several Hungarian families, mostly Jewish, with one Roma, reflecting the diversity of life in Hungary before the Holocaust. Some families are religious, others are secular, some live in the countryside, others in the city.
The next rooms chronicle the efforts by Hungarian governments in the 1920s and 1930s to strip minorities of their rights, their property, and their dignity. It builds until you come to the ghettoization and deportation of Hungarian Jews. The exhibit uses photographs from the Auschwitz Album, which document the murder of a Hungarian transport.
The exhibit ends in the reconstructed Pava synagogue, whose quiet dignity serves as a memorial and place of contemplation.
I cannot recommend this museum more highly.
Holocaust Memorial Center

When in Budapest and its wonderful atractions, I would like to recommend the HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CENTER. It is a very special and new museum about the Hungarian tragedy during the II WW with a fantastic and modern museological proposal.Unfortunatelly not very visited because it is not in the "jewish quarter"near Dolhany St Synagogue.
web site is:http://www.hdke.hu/index.php?
and it is located at the 39 Páva St
Don't miss it!
